Happy 2010!

MUMS welcomes the New Year in February’s Chamber Ensemble Concert, where Copland’s Appalachian Spring joins works by Debussy, Martinu and Britten. With the exciting new Piano Festival, Opera Scenes and Brahms’ magnificent Fourth Symphony also providing highlights that month, February sets the trend for a season filled with a huge variety of quality performances.

From The Lion King to Mozart’s Requiem, not to mention May’s Symphony and Chorus Concert featuring Janacek’s Glagolitic Mass, there will be no shortage of vocal treats this throughout the term. Janacek makes a further appearance in Estival, Manchester’s biggest student classical musical festival, where his awe-inspiring Sinfonietta (complete with 12 trumpets) closes the final concert. Indeed, Czech composers play a prominent role in Estival this year as we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Martinu – a year late. Add to this Big Band, Brass Band and Wind Orchestra (the list goes on...), and surely there is something for everyone this term at the Martin Harris Centre.
