Manchester University Big Band (MUBB)
Manchester University Big Band was formed in 2004 to give students the opportunity to play large ensemble jazz to a very high standard. The band rehearse each Wednesday evening in term time, and perform five or six times each academic year. MUBB's projects in recent years have been wide ranging and have included working with musicians from London's F-IRE collective featuring brand new music, to performing classic big band swing at UMSU's Pangea festival, and even appearing for the University's annual Student Pop Idol competition!
Last term they performed both to a buzzing Club Academy in their Classic Swing Night featuring singers from around the University and in a colourful Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall in December. Jazz standards, some arranged by the members themselves, were performed under the cool direction of Patrick Friel who also introduced each piece with charming wit.
MUBB is keen to listen to auditions from anybody that feels they have something to offer on the following instruments: Saxophone (Alto, Tenor and Baritone principally, but doubling Soprano, Clarinet and Flute is helpful), Trumpet, Trombone, Guitar, Piano, Bass (acoustic/electric), Drums. Auditions are held in the second week of the first semester and consist of some simple sight reading of big band music, some basic improvising and a quick chat. Ability to improvise is not absolutely essential. Guitar, piano and bass players should have a good knowledge of jazz harmony.
