Ad Solem - Manchester University Chamber Choir
Ad Solem, The University of Manchester Chamber Choir, takes its name from the motto of what was previously The Victoria University of Manchester. The Latin name means ‘towards the sun’ and reflects the ethos of the choir. Ad Solem has an excellent reputation within the University as well as further afield and is regularly engaged in concerts and services around the country. The choir performs a wide range of repertoire, and concerts consist of a capella music as well as collaborations with university orchestras. Recent performances have included Handel’s Dixit Dominus with The University of Manchester Baroque Orchestra and Ein deutsches Requiem by Brahms. In 2008, Ad Solem was the choir for the Manchester performances of Howard Goodall’s Eternal Light, part of the Rambert Dance Company’s UK tour. The choir consists of the most talented choral singers in the university, with around 25 members who are re-auditioned every year.In January 2010, Ad Solem travelled to Poland where it performed a programme of 20th Century music from the British Isles. Much of this music is available on a CD that the choir has recently recorded. A highlight of the 2009/10 season was the November performance of Ecce Manus Tradentis by Peter Maxwell Davies. The composer was in attendance and described it as “fantastic”. Recent orchestral performances have included Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra and a new commission by Uri Caine with the Hallé Orchestra. The choir’s Spring season recently culminated with a highly successful performance of Mozart’s Requiem with The University of Manchester Chamber Orchestra.
