President

The University of Manchester Music Society (MUMS) welcomes you to the academic year 2012-13. Whether you are studying music at Manchester in your first year, working on a PHD in nuclear physics, or you simply just love music-making, we provide you with a number of ensembles within which to rehearse, perform and also to get to know other devoted musicians.

Averaging at least 400 active members, MUMS is one of the university's largest and most sedulous societies, putting on over 50 concerts each year. Alongside this, we are also planning a back-to-back performance of two early opera masterpieces, a symphony orchestra tour to Europe and large-scale collaborations between other university societies, not to mention countless social events throughout the year to reflect and enhance the collective, sociable aspects of Manchester's music scene. It often comes as a surprise to observers to discover that we are an entirely student-run society, so if you are gifted in leadership and teamwork, you might well find yourself part of the team next year!

Head to our 'ensembles page' for information on the variety of groups that we run. Both our String Orchestra and our Wind Orchestra (MUWO) can be joined by simply attending an early rehearsal and signing up, whilst the rest of our ensembles are auditioned towards the beginning of each semester. For information regarding these auditions, or any other questions regarding our society, contact Zoë Hughes  on secretary@mumusicsociety.co.uk

This year promises to be a fantastic year for the society, with all that we have already planned, combined with the astuteness and dedication of our new committee and the outstanding talent of our soloists, ensemble performers, conductors and composers. We aim to keep you informed on our upcoming activities with our beloved 'Sunday Update' and our presence on Facebook, but email our secretary if you require any further details.

I very much hope to see you in our ensembles throughout the year, and look forward to getting to know you in rehearsals, or on some of our epic socials!
